VISTA, CA – April 26, 2006 –Aperio Technologies, Inc. announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued the company patent No. 7,035,478, entitled “System and Method for Data Management in a Linear-Array-Based Microscope Slide Scanner.”

Aperio is the leading provider of microscope slide scanners and related software in the field of digital microscope slide imaging (virtual microscopy). Aperio’s ScanScope® scanners are based on a patented (line) scanning method that has enabled the Company to leap-frog the competition in performance and price. ScanScope scanners create a digital image of an entire microscope slide at giga-pixel resolution in minutes. This digital slide features inherently superior image quality and is generated in a fraction of the time of competitive offerings, enabling—for the first time—high-throughput automated scanning of entire microscope slides.

“Aperio pioneered the use of line scanning in virtual microscopy, setting new standards for scanning performance and image quality. Our technology leadership has contributed significantly to the development of the rapidly emerging digital pathology market,” said Dirk Soenksen, Aperio’s chief executive officer. “This patent solidifies our intellectual property position in the use of line-scanning by encompassing methods for converting imagery data from any type of linear-array detector into digital slides. We are pleased to be further strengthening Aperio’s already formidable patent position in virtual microscopy, a position that comprises over 20 issued, licensed or pending patents covering digital slide capture, compression, viewing, management and entire-slide analysis. Our patent portfolio also includes licenses to the rich virtual microscopy patents of Bacus Laboratories, Inc., a suite of patents we believe are essential for anyone wishing to do business in the field of virtual microscopy.”

About Digital Pathology and Virtual Microscopy

Virtual microscopy—the practice of converting entire glass microscope slides to high resolution digital slides that can be viewed, managed and analyzed—is the key technology that enables digital pathology. Digital pathology is a digital image-based environment for digital slide viewing and analysis that delivers consistent and accurate results, faster than traditional methods. It facilitates immediate access from anywhere to information obtained from glass microscope slides, and provides powerful tools for the instant archival and intelligent retrieval of histo-pathological data. Digital pathology is compatible with PACS (picture archiving and communication systems) and supports the vision of an enterprise-wide healthcare IT solution aimed at the electronic medical record (EMR).
