Aperio Launches ScanScope CS

Virtual Microscopy Leader Premiers a Sleek New High-performance Slide Scanner for Digital Pathology

Vista, CA – September 12, 2005 – Aperio Technologies, the leading provider of virtual microscopy systems, is proud to announce ScanScope® CS, a compact high-performance slide scanner with advanced features. The new instrument bows today at CAP '05 - The Pathologists' Meeting in Chicago, IL. ScanScope CS features Aperio's patented linear-array scanning technology along with a rich set of features, in a trim and elegant design. The CS model is supported by Aperio's powerful Digital Slide Information Management Software for viewing, managing and analyzing digital slides.

ScanScope CS features a convenient five-slide capacity. It achieves a 20x scanning throughput of less than four minutes per slide, a 25 percent improvement over its predecessor, ScanScope T3. Standard features of the ScanScope CS include a 2x magnification changer that enables scanning at 20x and 40x with a single high-resolution 20x/0.75 objective lens. Also included is a JPEG2000 hardware compression board that ensures the highest image quality available, without compromising scanning throughput. ScanScope CS has a 30 percent smaller footprint than ScanScope T3 and is designed for maximum flexibility to enable future performance improvements.

ScanScope CS comes standard with Release 7 of Aperio's Digital Slide Information Management Software, which integrates creation, archival, retrieval, viewing, and analysis of digital slides, and includes powerful tools for managing image metadata, as well as queuing features for managing laboratory workflow. ScanScope CS also supports Remote Revisit, an interactive telepathology mode that delivers crisp, responsive, high quality through-focus (depth) images at magnifications up to 85x, via the Internet.

"ScanScope CS is the world's most advanced slide scanner," said Dirk Soenksen, chief executive officer at Aperio. "As the leader in the rapidly growing field of virtual microscopy, we are continually innovating to advance the state of the art. Our vision is that the digitization of Pathology will follow a similar path to Radiology, and ScanScope CS is a significant advance in addressing the emergent needs of this soon-to-be $1 billion digital pathology market."

Virtual microscopy is the practice of converting entire glass microscope slides to high resolution digital slides-whole-slide images that can be remotely viewed, quantitatively analyzed, and readily annotated, shared and managed-without a traditional microscope. Aperio's line of ScanScope Systems delivers automated high-speed digital slide creation, management, and analysis for pathology. Archival and retrieval, quality assurance, frozen section interpretation, secondary consultations, and entire-slide image analysis are all improved with a ScanScope System.
