VISTA, CA – March 29, 2006 – Aperio Technologies, the leading provider of digital pathology and virtual microscopy systems, announces an exclusive license agreement with Zoomify, Inc. to resell the leading third-party web viewing software to the digital pathology market. Zoomify’s software enables Internet viewing of industry-standard digital slide files from any standard web server. Digital slide files are multi-gigabyte images of entire microscope slides that are created by a microscope slide scanner such as Aperio’s ScanScope. Zoomify’s technology is used for the digital slide gallery on Aperio’s website at aperio.com/gallery. “Aperio has been a long-time partner, and we are pleased that the company decided to increase its commitment to our software,” said David Urbanic, president of Zoomify Inc. “We are confident that as the exclusive reseller, Aperio will deliver the full value of our software in digital pathology. Zoomify will continue to sell directly to end users in all markets.” “Zoomify’s web browser-based viewing software complements Aperio’s industry-leading ImageScope desktop viewing software, solidifying our leadership in viewing solutions for digital slides,” explained Dirk Soenksen, chief executive officer of Aperio. “Zoomify’s web-based viewing capabilities are integrated into our Spectrum™ digital pathology information management system, providing all Aperio customers with enhanced viewing capabilities.” About Digital Pathology and Virtual Microscopy Virtual microscopy—the practice of converting entire glass microscope slides to high resolution digital slides that can be viewed, managed and analyzed—is the key technology that enables digital pathology. Digital pathology is a digital image-based environment for digital slide viewing and analysis that delivers consistent and accurate results, faster than traditional methods. It facilitates immediate access from anywhere to information obtained from glass microscope slides, and provides powerful tools for the instant archival and intelligent retrieval of histo-pathological data. Digital pathology is compatible with PACS (picture archiving and communication systems) and supports the vision of an enterprise-wide healthcare IT solution aimed at the electronic medical record (EMR).
With the largest installed base of virtual microscopy systems, Aperio Technologies is a worldwide leader in virtual microscopy and digital pathology. Aperio’s ScanScope® scanners and software systems deliver integrated digital slide creation, viewing, management, and analysis capabilities to pathologists, and set the standard in digital pathology. Applications include tissue microarrays, toxicologic pathology, image analysis, workflow systems (PACS), telepathology, frozen sections, hematopathology, and cytopathology. Aperio’s web-based Spectrum digital pathology information management software delivers decision support information in context, with gross (macro) images, micro digital slide images, reports, case histories, and other associated documents and images cross-linked and concurrently viewable, anywhere, anytime. With headquarters in Vista, California, Aperio serves a global pathology market in research and education and is pursuing regulatory clearance to address digital slide-based diagnoses in the clinical market.
