Systems Pathology Company Selects Aperio’s High-Throughput Digital Pathology Platform

Aperio’s Digital Pathology Platform Expected to Accelerate SPC’s Deployment of Novel Image Analysis Solutions for Toxicologic Pathology

Vista, CA– March 28, 2007 Aperio Technologies, Inc., the leading provider of digital pathology systems and services to the healthcare and life sciences industry, is pleased to announce that Systems Pathology Company (SPC) LLC has selected Aperio’s award-winning ScanScopeTM slide scanning system and SpectrumTM digital pathology information management software to assist in the development of their automated digital imaging software solutions for use in toxicologic pathology and pathology-related analyses. Aperio’s software platform, which includes a patented algorithm framework, significantly advances SPC’s ability to build image analysis capabilities for tissue classification and analysis in toxicologic pathology.

“Aperio’s digital pathology platform helps us focus our efforts on SPC’s core competency, which is image analysis algorithms for the toxicologic pathology market,” stated Dr. Gary Knutsen, President and Managing Member of Systems Pathology Company. “We systematically evaluated the image quality of several leading slide scanning systems and selected Aperio because ScanScope images were well-matched to the needs of our image analysis algorithms. Aperio’s Spectrum software also provides us with the data management, workflow integration and image analysis automation capabilities required for us to deploy a complete solution with our Big Pharma partners. We expect to reduce our time-to-market by not having to develop these capabilities ourselves.”

SPC’s library of software solutions, collectively referred to as the Computer Assisted Pathology System (CAPSTM) is used by toxicologic pathologists to augment traditional practices - increasing their productivity and diagnostic objectivity, and allowing additional time for biologic interpretation and other value-added research and development activities.

Aperio’s digital pathology systems are based on the company’s patented linear array- based ScanScope slide scanners, which create seamless, true color whole slide images from an entire glass slide in a matter of minutes. Aperio’s slide scanning systems are offered with Spectrum software to enable the secure viewing, analysis and management of digital slides and other images in a multi-user, multi-site environment.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Systems Pathology Company and to play a key role in the advancement of their breakthrough work in toxicologic pathology,” said Dirk Soenksen, CEO of Aperio. “We are excited about the success our customers and partners are able to achieve as a result of Aperio’s innovative digital pathology platform.”
