Vista, CA, April, 2003 - Aperio Technologies in collaboration with marketing partner DakoCytomation launched the latest version of ScanScope at the 92nd Annual Meeting of the U.S. and Canadian Academy of Pathology. The DakoCytomation ScanScope is based on the same proprietary scanning technology and superior image quality of Aperio's T108 model.

The ScanScope is an innovative microscope slide scanner that, for the first time, makes it practical to digitize entire slides, creating a virtual slide environment for automated microscopic inspection in pathology, cytology, hematology and related fields.

Virtual microscopy is the digital equivalent of traditional microscopy. Instead of looking through the eyepieces of a microscope, a digital image (virtual slide) of an entire slide is viewed on a display monitor. Virtual slides can be viewed, panned and zoomed on a computer monitor, from anywhere in the world; with the same efficiency as a glass slide under a microscope. Once digitized, virtual slides can be analyzed by computer software, increasing the efficiency and improving diagnostic accuracy. Virtual microscopy addresses the challenges of creating, viewing, annotating, storing and processing virtual slides.

The DakoCytomation ScanScope is suitable for high-throughput slide scanning and provides the following additional features:

  • Automated slide loader with 160 slide capacity
  • Bar code reader
  • Fully integrated single-unit system with network and power connection
